My teen idols go back to my childhood. There were the United States Astronauts! Growing up near a very active Air Force base in the 1960’s and 70’s, my interest in flight and space was almost immediate.

However by the time I was a teen in the mid-70’s, the Apollo program was done. Skylab was the focus and I can remember the concern a young man, on the staff of a camp I worked at in the summer of 1979,  had when it was falling out of orbit.  The Space Shuttle was on the drawing boards and would not fly until I was out of college in the early 80’s. So,  some of my childhood idols were out of work by my teenage years!

But my admiration for these men has continue down through the years. I have read John Glenn’ s memoirs and was very excited when he went up for STS-95 on the shuttle Discovery in 1998.
