A series of stories about men, Jim Gavin’s Middle Men Stories was interesting for the most part as it dealt with a variety of men at different ages and seasons of life and adulthood. The settings for most of the stories are in the Los Angeles area with one being set in the Berkley area.
I could relate to some of the characters and their issues – athleticism (or the lack of it), trying to determine my direction in life as it related to occupation, and the issue of relationships. There was plausibility in the main characters and I was also pleased to read a book about men and their lives.
However, I came away disappointed in part I was expecting more of a novel rather than a series of short stories and because I felt the stories went in predictable pattern of rising hope followed by that hope being dashed by the end of the story without a surprising twist in any story.
As a result I rate this an ‘ok’ read.
