Tuesday Book Review of Larry Stone’s The Story of the Bible

“Is the story of the Bible an account of its many translations? Is the story of the Bible part of the history of the Jewish people for more than three thousand years and the Christian church for two thousand years? Is the story of the Bible the effect it had on Western civilization? Is the story of the Bible the accounts of individuals whose lives were changed by its message? The story of the Bible is all of that and more.”

So writes Larry Stone in his introduction to a marvelous book that will be a reference source for me in the years ahead as well as an illustrative guide to the history of the Bible I will be recommending and using.

Published by Thomas Nelson, The History of The Bible, is a coffee table book that will find, and should find, its way into the pastor’s study as well as the hands of those seeking to understand how this important book came together. A plus for this particular book is the inclusion of sheeted pages that contain well documented illustrations of the ancient texts that have formed today’s Bibles.

This book is both a strong statement for the textual integrity and authority of scripture as well as a historical survey of how it has shaped Western society over the course of 2000 years. In side panels and illustrations, Stone brings rich art and good solid historic scholarship together in a highly readable way.

My hope for this book is that it will be published in an academic version that utilizes a DVD in place of the sheeted pages as the current edition, while suitable for classroom use, is more suitable for home use.
